The V10 Era

There was a time when you could stand at a Formula 1 circuit, close your eyes, and know exactly what was coming. The V10 era. Those engines did not simply make noise. They attacked the air. They came through the trees, across the grandstands and straight through your chest — that hard mechanical bark turning into a rising howl and finally an unforgettable scream.  That sound became part of an entire generation of Formula 1. And when the V10 occasionally escaped onto the road, the result was just as unforgettable. Lexus LFA. Porsche Carrera GT.  Years later, people still talk about how those cars sound.

There are faster cars now. There are cars with more horsepower. There are cars with staggering performance numbers. But fire up an LFA or Carrera GT and people still stop what they are doing.

That tells you everything.

A great engine has a voice. And Vesuvius has its own and it's a Perfect 10! Gordon Murray chose the V12. Pagani chose the V12. Nilu27 chose the V12. Beautiful engines. Extraordinary machinery. We chose the V10. Because ten cylinders have a different attitude, just like BHC. A V12 is incredibly smooth, sophisticated and almost orchestral. A V10 has teeth. There is more edge to the individual firing pulses. More mechanical character through the middle of the rev range. Then, as the engine climbs higher, everything begins to come together into that unmistakable V10 howl. But the sound of Vesuvius begins much deeper than the exhaust pipes.

At its heart is a custom billet-machined 5.8-liter specified engine program — a lightweight, compact 72-degree V10 designed from the beginning as something very different from a mass-production automobile engine. Billet-machined block and heads. A straight-shot breathing path toward the combustion chambers with light weight valve train components and special materials for a long lasting engine. Dry-sump lubrication. No timing belts. No accessory belts. A proven main-bearing architecture. Titanium and advanced low-friction coatings, including DLC technology on selected internal components. This isn't about touching some spectacular rpm number for three seconds on a dyno. It is about building an engine that can live there. Then we let it breathe. Ten cylinders pulling air through an intake architecture designed around the engine. Ten combustion events feeding an exhaust system developed specifically for Vesuvius and exiting through its unmistakable five-outlet exhaust. At lower rpm you hear the mechanical structure of the engine. Push harder and the note tightens. The induction gets harder. The exhaust starts ripping. The revs keep climbing. And somewhere between 8000 to beyond 10,000 rpm that compact 5.8-liter V10 becomes something you don't simply listen to. You feel it. But there is another reason Vesuvius will sound different.

The driver is part of the soundtrack. Behind that V10 is a true six-speed manual transaxle connected to an old-school gated shifter. Not paddles pretending to be manual. Not a computer deciding when the engine should change speed. Not automatic rev matching making every downshift perfect. Not solenoids quietly doing the work in the background. Your hand moves the lever. Your foot operates the clutch. Your right foot matches the engine. Your sweaty palms on that perfectly weighted shifter knob actuates the shifter shaft down through the gate, catch the throttle perfectly and that V10 snaps immediately to the rpm you asked for. Get it wrong and the car isn't going to cover for you. That is part of driving! And that means every acceleration, every downshift, every blip of the throttle and every run toward redline will sound slightly different because the human being behind the wheel is part of the machine.

That is what has disappeared from so many modern exotic cars. We are putting it back. Vesuvius isn't trying to imitate the LFA. It isn't trying to recreate the Carrera GT. And it certainly isn't trying to sound like somebody else's V12. Those cars simply remind us why the sound of a great engine matters. Vesuvius has its own voice and it's perfect. A lightweight, compact, custom billet-machined 5.8-liter V10 screaming  to 10,000+ rpm connected directly to the driver through a real gated six-speed manual. No artificial soundtrack. No automatic rev matching. No machinery pretending the driver did something he didn't. Just air, fuel, spark, fire, gears and a human being in command. Long before you see Vesuvius coming, you will know exactly what it is. A PERFECT 10! Say hello to your new best friend...

That is Vesuvius.

A Perfect 10. A Visceral Savage.
